Il sostantivo “motore”, può essere tradotto con motor o engine, a seconda dei contesti. Motor si riferisce quasi sempre ai motori alimentati da elettricità, ma viene largamente usato come aggettivo per indicare le automobili: motor industry, l'industria automobilistica. Engine indica i motori di altro tipo, come quello a combustione di automobili, motociclette ecc.: My car's got engine problems, ho problemi con il motore della macchina (non My car's got motor problems). In alcuni casi engine viene tradotto con “macchina”: siege engine, macchina da guerra; steam engine, macchina a vapore; engine room, sala macchine.
